$1 Gold

The diminutive $1 gold coin was first minted in 1849 and thereafter till 1889 going through 2 major redesigns during the production run. It is a tiny coin ranging from 13mm to 15mm in size. The first type at 13mm was only 3/4ths the size of a dime and easily lost or misplaced. Obviously this didn't make people happy and there were many complaints. It was redesigned in 1854 to 15mm but thinner. The problem with this version is that it was difficult to get a good strike and thus after only 2 years production of the 2nd type ended in 1856. The 3rd type was then minted from 1856-1889 and was the last $1 gold coin minted in the U.S.

Fairly large quantities of the $1 gold coin were minted between 1849 and 1889 and it saw regular circulation throughout the country, even more so than silver dollars of the time.
