$20 Liberty Gold

The $20 Liberty, also known as the Coronet Double Eagle, came to be minted following the discovery of the massive gold fields in California in 1848. Because the first $10 gold coin minted in 1795 was known as the Eagle the $20 gold coin became known as the Double Eagle. Legislation authorizing the gold double eagle coin was passed in 1849 and was designed by James B. Longacre.

The coin features Miss Liberty on the obverse facing left with a small crown, called a coronet, inscribed with the word Liberty. The reverse is a version of the Great Seal of the United States with the denomination indicated by "TWENTY D". The double eagle is 34.00 mm in diameter and weighs 33.436 grams.

Three basic types of the $20 Liberty exist, the Class I being minted from 1580-1866. Class II came about with the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added above the Eagle on the reverse. In 1877 a class III coin was created when the denomination "D." was changed to the full word "DOLLAR".

More than 100 million $20 Liberty Coronet Double Eagles were minted from 1850-1907 when they were replaced with the $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle. Popular with both collectors and investors there are many fairly common dates and some very scarce dates that bring six figure prices even for circulated coins.
