$2.50 Liberty Gold

Minted from 1840-1907 the Christian Gobrecht designed $2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, also known as the Coronet Quarter Eagle, has been called the workhorse of American gold coinage. The design was introduced on the 1838 $10 Liberty Head Eagle. Miss Liberty is facing left wearing the small coronet crown with LIBERTY inscribed on it. Thirteen stars circling the edge are representative of the 13 original American colonies. The eagle with shield over its chest clutching an olive branch and three arrows dominates the reverse.

An interesting type of the Coronet Quarter Eagle is the "CAL" version minted following a shipment of gold from California to the East coast after the great gold strike of 1848. The "CAL" designation was to show the coins were minted from gold coming from California. Few of these gold Quarter Eagles were minted and now trade for very high values.
