$3 Gold

Almost universally rejected by the public, the $3 Gold coin was intended to be used to purchase sheets of 100 .03 cent stamps. Or at least that was the excuse used to produce the coin. Designed by John Longacre, the obverse features Miss Liberty as an Indian Princess wearing a headress with the word LIBERTY inscribed on the band. On the reverse a wreath is featured that is comprised of wheat, cotton, corn and tobacco circling the date and "3 Dollars".

Though it was minted over a 35 year period from 1854 - 1889 only about half a million were actually produced. Figure in those melted, lost or otherwise destroyed and that leaves only a miniscule number remaining. All dates and mints are rare.
