Minted only from 1834 - 1838, the $5 Classic Head Half Eagle was designed by William Kneass. During its short 4 year production run Kneass and Christian Gobrecht made several slight changes leading to many different types for collectors.
Because of its heavy circulation even during the years of the $5 Liberty Half Eagle there are few mint state examples of the $5 Classic Head Half Eagle. While proofs of the coin were produced they numbered fewer than 20 and are now six figure coins. Even with such a short production run the gold coins are relatively affordable in circulated grades.
