$50 American Buffalo Gold

The American Buffalo gold coin series is based on one of the United States most revered coins, the Buffalo Nickel designed by James Earle Fraser in 1913. Fraser's design was slightly modified for the new gold coin. Where the mound area of the original coin on the reverse read "FIVE CENTS" it has been changed to "$50 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD. " The traditional motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears on the reverse to the left of the buffalo's head.

First released in 2006 the Buffalo gold coin weighs in a 31.108 grams, is 2.95mm thick with reeded edges and is composed of 99.99% pure (24k) gold. In 2008 an addition of fractional Buffalo gold coins was included in $5, $10, $25 denominations composed of 1/10th oz, 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz of gold respectively.

Interestingly the Buffalo gold coin is the first pure gold coin (99.99% 24K) produced by the U.S. Mint. Some have speculated this was done to compete with other nations gold coins that were outselling the American Gold Eagle which is 91.67% (22k) pure.

For whatever reason it was produced, the American Buffalo gold coin is a boon for the collector. It is one of the most beautiful gold coins every produced by the US Mint and is widely collected and admired.
